The story “Gillu” is about a deep bond between the narrator and a small squirrel. One day, the narrator finds a baby squirrel lying injured after being attacked by two crows. She decides to take care of the tiny creature, giving it shelter, food, and medicine. She names the squirrel Gillu.
Under the narrator’s care, Gillu slowly recovers. He starts responding with soft sounds and shows affection. Gillu loves to eat cashew nuts and often climbs around playfully. He becomes very close to the narrator and always stays near her.
When the narrator falls ill and is hospitalized, Gillu becomes sad and refuses to eat. But after she returns, he shows his happiness by gently touching her forehead with his paws. This shows how much love and connection there is between them.
As time passes, Gillu begins to look outside through the window. Understanding his wish for freedom, the narrator opens a part of the window so he can go outside whenever he wants. Gillu starts exploring the world outside but always returns to her.
After living for about two years, Gillu becomes weak and finally passes away. The narrator buries him under a flower plant in her garden. She remembers him with love and respect.
